Kajabi Expert Agents vs an owned-site AI sales agent

TL;DR. Kajabi Expert Agents (Sales Agent before purchase, Teaching Assistant after) live on Kajabi-hosted pages only. An owned-site AI sales agent is a script tag on domains you control — including Kajabi via Header Page Scripts, plus any marketing site or multi-surface funnel you run off-Kajabi. HelpShelf is the owned-site option we sell: cited answers from pages you connect, named leads via visitor-confirmed handoff, Free/$0 · Pro/$49 · Scale/$149. Expert Agents facts below come from Kajabi’s public help docs and V1 product blog. Use both if you want. This page does not ask you to rip Expert Agents out.

Who this is for. Course creators and coaches already on Kajabi who also run (or will run) an owned domain, link-in-bio site, or multi-surface funnel — and need a clear fork between native-only and owned-site.

The real fork is hosting surface, not "AI or no AI"

Both paths answer buyer and member questions with AI grounded in your content. The decision that actually changes your stack is where the agent can render.

Expert Agents = Sales Agent + Teaching Assistant on Kajabi-hosted pages only

Kajabi Expert Agents are native AI chat experiences on your Kajabi site (Expert Agents overview):

  • Sales Agent — pre-purchase, on landing and sales pages; references Offer details, pricing, and product descriptions (set up a Sales Agent).
  • Teaching Assistant — post-purchase, inside a Product; answers from lessons, transcripts, and community posts the member can access.

You place them in the Theme Editor as a floating button or an embedded Agent block. Kajabi’s FAQ is explicit: Expert Agents / Sales Agents cannot be embedded on a non-Kajabi website — they render only on Kajabi-hosted pages.

Owned-site AI sales agent = script tag on domains you control

An owned-site agent (HelpShelf’s class) is a script you paste into sites you control. On Kajabi that usually means Settings → Site details → Header Page Scripts. The same agent can also sit on a marketing site, podcast site, or other domain you own — so one cited sales layer can follow the buyer across Kajabi and off-Kajabi surfaces.

First-party note: HelpShelf is the owned-site product in this comparison. We sell it. Expert Agents claims below are cited from Kajabi’s own docs and blog, not from our lab tests.

When native Expert Agents are enough

Stay native when most of this is true:

  • Your entire buyer and member journey lives on Kajabi-hosted pages.
  • You want Theme Editor placement (floating button or embedded Agent block) with no third-party script.
  • You are fine without named-lead capture in chat for V1 (Kajabi’s product blog states V1 does not capture leads, transact in chat, or initiate conversations).
  • You prefer platform-native Teaching Assistant access control inside Products — answers only from content the member’s membership grants.

If that is your stack, Kajabi’s own setup guides are the right next step: Expert Agents overview and set up a Sales Agent.

When an owned-site AI sales agent is the better fit

Lean owned-site when you need one or more of these:

  • The same agent on Kajabi and an owned marketing site / other domains (Expert Agents cannot leave Kajabi-hosted pages).
  • Citations on supported answers, and a clear refuse when the content does not support a claim.
  • Named leads when the visitor wants a human — visitor confirms the handoff; you get the question, contact, and page context.
  • Predictable creator plans (Free/$0 · Pro/$49 · Scale/$149) instead of (or alongside) Kajabi’s per-agent add-on math. Both are honest prices; pick the shape that matches how many surfaces you run.

HelpShelf does not replace Kajabi checkout, email, funnels, or the members area. It is the cited-answers + named-leads layer on top. Full Kajabi install story: HelpShelf for Kajabi.

Install reality check (no invented workarounds)

Native Expert Agents

  • Theme Editor: floating chat button or embedded Agent block on Kajabi-hosted pages.
  • Theme / Builder gates apply (Builder 2.0; Encore / Premier / Momentum version floors listed in Kajabi docs).
  • Cannot embed on a non-Kajabi website.

Owned-site widget on Kajabi (HelpShelf and peers)

  • Paste the script into Settings → Site details → Header Page Scripts (site-wide custom code). Your Kajabi plan must allow third-party embeds.
  • Per Kajabi’s custom code docs: Header Page Scripts run on every page except Offer checkout pages and upsell pages.
  • Third-party widgets share that checkout / upsell limit. HelpShelf does not appear on Kajabi checkout or upsell pages. Plan placement for public sales and content pages that do run those scripts — same honesty already live on /for/kajabi.

How this differs from Chatbase / Intercom / Tidio

Short foil — not a seven-tool listicle (those live on the course creators and coaches flanks).

Tool classWhat they sell (public)Why they are a weak substitute for this fork
ChatbaseHorizontal CX agents (support + sales + product guidance) across widget and messaging channelsGeneric brand/CX story; not a Kajabi hosting-surface decision page
Intercom + FinHelpdesk + Fin AI Agent; seats + per-outcome billingBuilt for staffed support orgs; heavy for a solo Kajabi coach / course creator
Tidio (Lyro)Live chat + Lyro for SMB / ecommerceShopify / storefront gravity; thin course-creator sales-agent story

None of those answers “native Kajabi-hosted only vs script tag on domains I control.” That is the fork this page owns.

Pick a path

  1. Stay native. Your funnel is Kajabi-hosted end to end, and Theme Editor placement is enough. Start with Kajabi’s docs: Expert Agents overview.
  2. Need an owned-site cited sales agent. Same answers across Kajabi custom code and domains you control, with citations and named leads. → See HelpShelf for Kajabi or Get answers that sell.
  3. Use both. Complements. Expert Agents stay on Kajabi-hosted pages; HelpShelf covers cited answers + named leads on the surfaces a script tag can reach. Replaces nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Can Kajabi Expert Agents run on a non-Kajabi website?

No. Kajabi’s FAQ states Expert Agents render only on Kajabi-hosted pages (Expert Agents overview; same answer on the Sales Agent setup page).

Can HelpShelf sit on a Kajabi site?

Yes — one script tag in Header Page Scripts, on a Kajabi plan that allows third-party embeds. Checkout and upsell pages do not run those scripts. Details: HelpShelf for Kajabi.

Does HelpShelf replace Expert Agents?

No. Keep Expert Agents if they fit. HelpShelf is the owned-site cited-answers + named-leads layer. Complements Kajabi. Replaces nothing.

Does the native Sales Agent capture leads in V1?

Kajabi’s V1 product blog (What is Kajabi Expert Agents?, May 19, 2026) states Expert Agents in V1 do not capture leads, do not transact in chat, and do not initiate conversations. Don’t claim more than Kajabi’s V1 blog states until they publish otherwise.

What about Teaching Assistant vs HelpShelf after purchase?

Teaching Assistant is access-aware inside Kajabi Products — answers from lessons and community content the member can access. HelpShelf answers from published help / lessons / policies you connect to the shelf; it does not log into the members area unless you add that content as a source. Different access models; pick (or combine) based on where students ask.

How much does each cost?

  • Kajabi Expert Agents: $49/agent/mo early adopter (Aug 1–Sep 30 2026, 12-mo lock) → $79/agent/mo; 1,000 messages + 250 AI credits / agent / mo — cite help. On top of your Kajabi plan.
  • HelpShelf: Free/$0 · Pro/$49 · Scale/$149 — /pricing. Separate product.

No savings-percentage claims.

I sell a course / coaching — which HelpShelf page?

Same product. Different primary keyword and H1.

This is a decision page, not a scorecard. Hosting surface is the fork Kajabi’s own FAQ makes explicit. Citations, named leads, and multi-site coverage are HelpShelf’s wedges — only where product behavior and Kajabi’s V1 blog support the contrast. Cite the sources. Pick native, owned-site, or both.
